Camp Highlight Counselor
Job Summary:
The Camp Counselor will perform a variety of tasks in a summer camp setting including recreation activities, arts and crafts, sports, games, drama performances, camping, and hobbies. They will utilize the Camp Highlight curriculum and values to shape campers’ overall experience. This position reports directly to Camp Highlight’s Assistant Director(s).
Duties/Responsibilities:
Pre-camp/Planning Season - from date of hire to camp start date
Attends any required training sessions (estimated X hours of training)
Utilizes Slack regularly to develop group dynamics with other counselors and answer any messages from Camp Administration Team
Communicates appropriately and completes tasks in a timely manner
Creates and edits activity plans according to activity plan schedule
Assists with development of evening activity plans
During camp
Enforces camp rules and regulations and ensures safety in all facilities
Manages designated cabin environment and cabin campers with co-counselors
Leads and supports daily activities that were self-created and/or assigned
If assigned, prepares and leads a morning meeting
Follows daily camp schedule, ensuring activities start and end on time, and manage transition periods between activities well
Adapts well and is flexible to any unforeseen circumstances
Utilizes Camp Highlight curriculum to build on overall experience at camp and as a behavior management tool
Accepts feedback from and delivers appropriate feedback to other counselors
Engages and interacts with campers in-the-moment and gives them their full attention
Mediates campers disputes and escalates camper issues appropriately to Assistant Director(s)
Required Skills/Abilities:
Enthusiastic and positive attitude
Adaptability - things don’t always go as planned, and rolling with the punches is important
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to learn and enforce the camp’s safety rules and Camp Highlight Curriculum
Must attend staff meetings and orientation during the summer season.
Education and Experience:
Previous experience working with children preferred.
Must pass reference checks and background screenings, which include fingerprint check and sex offender registry check.
