The #peytonheartproject makes it NYC following the Camp Highlight Picnic in September.
As part of the Virtues Project at Camp Highlight, we encourage the campers to be kinder to themselves and to everyone around them. As we explore the Virtue of Generosity, we are asking them to consider what it is like to selflessly provide their energy, their love, their acceptance, their trust in others while expecting nothing in return. In the bigger picture, there are great returns on their actions because generosity and kindness will appear at a time when they need it most.
Each summer, campers participate in a service project throughout the week that will be distributed to the intended audience after camp ends. This summer, we choose to participate in the Peyton Heart Project, which is a movement to raise awareness to the issues of teen suicide and bullying, to get people talking about these issues, and to show people that their lives are worth living and that every life matters. The campers were able to crochet or sew small hearts with messages of hope attached to each one. Campers embraced this project and were seen around camp sewing and crocheting everywhere--from the Arts & Crafts Shed to the gaga pits to the Dining Hall. At the end of the week, campers and staff brought handfuls of hearts to leave at public places such as bus stops, bulletin boards, and park fences in their own communities. Their generosity and love is surely shining brightly in their many hometowns from this project.

If you would like to make a difference in the life of Camp Highlight camper, consider donating to the Campership Fund which provides financial aid to help cover tuition to families in need. Paying it forward will allow a young person to experience a very magical and accepting place while enhancing their skills in being kind, accepting, and generous people.
